Training Methodology

The training method in all of REACH's training programmes is participant/problem-based and needs-centered. The central aspect of this method is the presentation of problems placed within the context of every day experience. Lectures, case studies, group presentations and discussions will be used to reinforce this training method.

Module 3

Breaking Down Barriers: Effective Community Engagement Strategies for Black and Minority Ethnic Communities

At the end of this training module participants will be able to:

  • Acknowledge and appreciate the role of cultural diversity in BME communities and effective individuals and group engagement for management of health services.
  • Develop cultural skills needed by professionals and specialised organisations in providing appropriate and effective services to people from BME communities.
  • Identify the 'growth-negative' and 'growth-positive' culture sensitive factors within the BME communities.
  • Develop culturally sensitive interpersonal relationships and team-building skills within the BME communities for problem identification, problem solving and decision-making.
  • Learn the different stages in community engagement.
  • Understand the principles of community engagement and what they mean.
  • Know the strategies for effective engagement of BME communities.
