Training Methodology

The training method in all of REACH's training programmes is participant/problem-based and needs-centered. The central aspect of this method is the presentation of problems placed within the context of every day experience. Lectures, case studies, group presentations and discussions will be used to reinforce this training method.

Module 1

Understanding Cultural Diversity and Migration - ABC of Black and Minority Ethnic Communities

At the end of this training module participants will be able to:

  • Acknowledge and appreciate the role of cultural diversity in BME communities and effective management of health services within the communities
  • Develop cultural skills needed by professionals and specialised organisations in providing appropriate and effective services to people from BME communities
  • Identify the 'growth-negative' and 'growth-positive' cultural factors for effective and appropriate engagement with the people from BME communities
  • Develop culturally sensitive interpersonal relationships and team-building skills within the BME communities for problem identification, problem solving and decision-making
  • Share relevant knowledge, experiences and strategies in health delivery and management with people from different cultural backgrounds, countries, regions, and religions within the BME communities in Scotland
  • Describe UK and Scottish legislations and policies pertinent to cultural diversity/competency health and social care services.
