A Qualitative, Study Examining Perceived barriers in Accessing Health Care Services: Asylum Seekers and Refugees (ASRs) & Service Providers Perspective.

Time Period: November 2006-April 2007

Current Work to Date:

  • An advisory committee has been formed with members from the Public Health Department at Glasgow and Clyde Health Board, Asylum Seekers Support team and other relevant members.
  • Literature Review was carried out to aid into the research, including the design of the questionnaires.
  • Interviews were carried out with the ASR participants with the help of semi structured questionnaire and Focus Groups were conducted with health and social care service providers.
  • Data is being analysed and a draft report is being complied.

Status of Report: Final Report Pending & a Launch date of the Report to be confirmed

Future Work

From the research findings, REACH shall identify the barriers asylum seekers and refugees face in accessing healthcare services and inform healthcare providers on specific outcomes of the research pertinent to the health needs of this population. In addition, based on the research outcome recommendations will be made to healthcare service providers and policy makers, which will help them in effectively addressing the barriers ASRs face in accessing various services and facilitate in designing tailored made healthcare services for this particular group.
